I'm flying to the East Coast for Labor day weekend - flying in to BOS and renting a car to drive up to Maine for the weekend (and back on Monday).
Just booked a "special" rental through Thrifty - they say it'll be a compact car or larger, based on availability. I at least wanted a compact so I'd get maybe a Ford Focus, which I wouldn't mind getting to drive.
- Any particular car or category of car you folks would suggest? Something somewhat fun yet economical for the long weekend would be great.
- Any typical cars in current fleets you'd stay away from or recommend? I know it's a pretty grim group to choose from, but I'm sure some are still better than others?!

I've actually done the Compact or Larger rental thing in the USA. This is how it went.
"Sir, let me see what cars we have for you..."
"Do you have a Crown Vic?"
[hands over keys for Crown Vic]

Haha, yeah the midsize options sounded horrible on their websites.
Honestly it was just the smaller cars that sounded somewhat appealing - at least chance of getting a Focus or a Dart. Above that, anything but a Mustang sounds pretty shit.

Have they had crown vics in any rental fleets in the last decade?! That would actually be pretty awesome.
I'd like something decent like a focus, or something absolutely ridiculous otherwise. No middle ground Galants (do they still really have those? All the websites show that as an example, scary) or Altimas, please.

Rented from Thrifty in Seattle a few weeks ago, reserved (and got) a midsize. There were a bunch of Jettas (we took one), and a couple other options I don't remember. Prii were in some other aisle, don't remember. Most of the stuff was decent. I think I saw some Foci in there somewhere, not sure how they were classed.
